Airbus celebrated a major milestone by inaugurating its second final assembly line (FAL) for the A320neo family at its Mobile, Alabama facility.
This expansion strengthens Airbus’ U.S. manufacturing presence, supports economic growth, and boosts production capacity for one of the world’s most popular commercial aircraft.
The event, attended by Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, U.S. Congressman Shomari Figures, and Airbus executives, underscores the company’s commitment to the U.S. market and its global production goals.
A Decade of Growth in Mobile
Airbus’ Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley facility began producing A320-family aircraft in 2015, delivering its first A321 to JetBlue in 2016. Since then, the site has grown from 116 acres and 300 employees to 190 acres and over 2,000 workers.
In 2020, Airbus added an A220 assembly line, and by July 2025, it celebrated the 100th A220 delivery. The new A320neo line, announced in 2022, aligns with Airbus’ target to produce 75 A320neo aircraft per month by 2027.
This second line enhances the site’s role as a key hub in Airbus’s global network of 13 assembly lines.
Boosting Production and Jobs
The new assembly line significantly increases production capacity for the A320neo family, which includes the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo models.
These aircraft are prized for their fuel efficiency, offering up to 20% savings over previous generations thanks to advanced engines and Sharklet wingtips.
The Mobile facility’s expansion includes over 1 million square feet of new infrastructure, such as double-bay hangars for A320s, quad-bay hangars for A220s, upgraded paint shops, and a new distribution center.
These upgrades ensure Airbus can meet rising demand from U.S. customers like Delta Air Lines, Spirit Airlines, and JetBlue.
Economically, the project is a game-changer for Alabama. The new line creates 300–400 direct jobs and supports thousands more through suppliers and construction.
As Daryl Taylor, Airbus Senior Vice President, noted, the facility fosters “generational careers” while contributing to local communities. The Mobile site has already delivered hundreds of aircraft, solidifying Alabama’s reputation as a manufacturing powerhouse.
Strategic Importance of Mobile Expansion
The timing of this expansion is critical. Airbus aims to deliver 820 aircraft globally in 2025, up from 766 in 2024, despite supply chain challenges. While engine deliveries from Pratt & Whitney remain on track, the new line helps address broader supplier bottlenecks.
By increasing U.S.-based production, Airbus strengthens its North American footprint and supports the growing demand for fuel-efficient, single-aisle jets. The A320neo family is a cornerstone of this strategy, offering airlines cost-effective and environmentally friendly options.
Looking Ahead
The inauguration marks a decade of Airbus’ investment in Mobile, which now plays a pivotal role in the company’s global operations. The facility’s growth reflects Airbus’s confidence in the U.S. market and Alabama’s workforce.
As production ramps up, the first aircraft from the new line are expected soon, further cementing Mobile’s status as a vital aerospace hub.
This expansion not only boosts Airbus’ ability to meet global demand but also drives economic prosperity in Alabama.
The Airbus Mobile facility expansion comes on the heels of news that the A320 line is now the most delivered airliner in commercial history, surpassing its rival the Boeing 737.
